Hunza was formerly a princely state bordering Xinjiang (autonomous region of China) to the northeast and Pamir to the northwest, which survived until 1974, when it was finally dissolved by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. The state bordered the Gilgit Agency to the south and the former princely state of Nagar to the east. The state capital was the town of Baltit (also known as Karimabad); another old settlement is Ganish Village which means “ancient gold” village. Hunza was an independent principality for more than 900 years, until the British gained control of it and the neighboring valley of Nagar between 1889 and 1891 through a military conquest. The then Mir/Tham (ruler) Safdar Khan of Hunza fled to Kashghar in China and sought what would now be called political asylum.

Skardu, on the other hand, offers dramatic landscapes, vast valleys, and unique attractions like Shangrila Lake and Katpana Desert. If you prefer culture and comfort, choose Hunza; if you love raw adventure and grand scenery, Skardu may feel more impressive.
People travel to Hunza for its breathtaking mountain scenery, peaceful environment, and rich cultural heritage. Surrounded by majestic peaks like Rakaposhi, the valley offers stunning views, especially at sunrise and sunset. Visitors explore historic landmarks such as Baltit Fort and enjoy the serene beauty of Attabad Lake. The region is also known for its hospitable people, clean surroundings, organic food, and relaxing atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers, families, and photographers seeking tranquility and adventure in northern Pakistan.
Yes, Hunza is cold during winters, with temperatures often dropping below freezing, especially in December and January. Upper Hunza (Gojal), including areas like Passu and Khunjerab Pass, are the coldest, experiencing heavy snow and icy conditions. Summers are mild and pleasant, making lower Hunza regions like Karimabad ideal for travel. Overall, Hunza’s climate varies with altitude, with higher valleys colder year-round and lower valleys enjoying moderate temperatures in summer.
Yes, traveling to Hunza by air is generally safe. Flights operate to Gilgit Airport under strict aviation regulations, and pilots are specially trained for mountain routes. However, due to weather and visibility conditions in northern areas, flights may sometimes be delayed or canceled. On clear days, it is one of the most scenic and comfortable ways to reach Hunza, saving long road travel time. Overall, it is considered safe, but travelers should keep flexibility in their schedule due to weather changes.
For a 5-day Hunza trip by air, pack warm clothes, including jackets, sweaters, thermal wear, gloves, and hats, as temperatures can be low, especially in mornings and evenings. Comfortable trekking shoes and sunglasses are essential for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Carry gadgets like a camera, power bank, phone with charger, and a universal travel adapter. Binoculars are useful for mountain and lake views. Light casual clothes for daytime and a raincoat or windbreaker for sudden weather changes are recommended. Overall, pack layers to adjust to varying temperatures across Hunza’s valleys and high-altitude areas.
